Want to stay active and explore the great outdoors? Trail running might be the perfect sport for you. Before you hit the trails, it is important that you have the appropriate shoes for trail running safety and overall comfort. In this guide, we will take a deep dive into the world of trail running shoes. We will look into why you need optimal trail running shoes, what makes for a good pair and how to decide which pair to buy. We will also highlight some of the reasons why trail running in New Zealand is especially fantastic.
Let’s get into it!
Lucky for you, New Zealand is home to some of the most fantastic trail running tracks. With beautiful nature all around, you’ll get to see some amazing sights as you are trail running in New Zealand. Take part in an organised trail running event or complete the track on your own time.
Queenstown Hill Walkway
The Queenstown Hill Walkway is 4.8km long, defined as moderately challenging due to the consistent incline. However, you’ll get to see an incredible view of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables that make the challenging run well worth it. If you are relatively fit, this trail should take about two hours and 14 minutes to finish.
Wairere Falls Track
If you aren’t afraid of a few stairs, the Wairere Falls Track is an awesome track to tackle. Located near Te Aroha, Waikato, this 5.5km trail offers incredible 360 views when you reach the summit. Bring some swimwear, as there are plenty of swimming spots along the way. Trail running shoes with good grip are a must, as the trail can get a tad slippery from wet weather. Depending on your fitness level, this track should take approximately two hours and 24 minutes to complete.
Massey Cossey Loop Track
The Massey Cossey Loop Track is a moderately challenging trail located near Papakura, Auckland. It has a fair few stairs but also a fair few downhills. You’ll get to see a bunch of birds, forest and views along the way, which makes it very worthwhile. In most cases, this track should take about two hours and 44 minutes to complete on average.
The trails are ready and waiting for you - all you need is a good pair of trail running shoes to get started. Having a dedicated pair of trail running shoes is so important, as it can prevent blisters, keep your feet dry, keep you comfortable and so much more. Once you know the features to look out for, the next step is to decide on the perfect pair for you.
