Overview

As one of the oldest public universities within the USA, the University of North Carolina has been enrolling students since 1795. The state has a prominent history of producing tar and pitch, which influenced the athletics team name of the 'Tar Heels'. The mascot of a ram dates back to 1924 when the team manager bought a ram the annual football game against Virginia Military Institute as good luck - the ram was inspired by past player Jack "The Battering Ram" Merrit. Undoubtedly one of the universities most famous alumni is Michael Jordan draft pick pverall number three in 1984 for by the Chicago Bulls - the rest is history!
